FIELD DEFINITION AND SCOPE
Number assigned by the Library of Congress to works acquired through one of its overseas acquisition programs.
Used to record the acquisition source of the item and also identifies certain programs under which materials are acquired at LC. The following types of numbers are included in this field:
- South Asian accession numbers which are used with materials acquired by the Library's New Delhi office. These numbers consist of codes for country and language followed by an accession number. Use of these numbers began in October 1984.
- PL480 numbers which were used with materials acquired through PL480 funds. These numbers are preceded by the prefix PL480. Use of these numbers was discontinued in August 1969.
- LACAP numbers which were used with materials acquired through the Latin American Cooperative Acquisitions Program. These numbers are preceded by the prefix LACAP. Use of these numbers was discontinued in 1973.
- East African accession numbers which were used with materials acquired in Africa. These numbers were composed of codes for country and language followed by an accession number. Use of these numbers was discontinued in August 1969.
- National Bibliography of Indian Literature 1901-1953 numbers which are used in the Microfilming of Indian Publications Project (MIPP), a project undertaken with the Center for Research Libraries. The Library of Congress, New Delhi Office assigned a number to each of the publications in the National Bibliography of Indian Literature 1901-1953. The number is used in the target for each publication filmed.
Repeatable for recording multiple numbers associated with different editions of the same work on one bibliographic record.
